the Mid-autumn Festival

What is the Mid-autumn Festival?

The Mid-Autumn Festival, held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, is one of the most important traditional Chinese festivals. There are many activities to celebrate the moon festival. For example, eating mooncakes is the most popular Mid-Autumn Festival activity. Mooncakes are cookies with various fillings like nuts, red bean paste, lotus root paste, egg yolk, meat, and fruit. They are usually round to symbolize the full moon and family reunion. Furthermore, we will also appreciate the full moon, worship the moon, enjoy family reunion dinner, drink osmanthus wine, make and hang festival lanterns.

The unexpected fun facts about the moon festival you should know

1. Right way to eat the mooncake: all family members are sharing one.

According to traditional customs, the right way to eat mooncakes is that the mooncake symbolizing the full moon is cut into pieces and shared by all family members, one slice for each family member. If there are family members who are not at home, the parents should store the mooncake pieces that belong to them and wait till they come home to taste it.

2. It is the time particularly efficacious to pray for a happy marriage.

In the old days, unmarried men and women would quietly pray under the full moon on the Mid-Autumn Festival, and plead to the matchmaker, God of Moon, to find a spouse and have a happy marriage. What an interesting fact about the Mid-Autumn Festival!
