Shooping for New Year goods: As a grand traditional festival of the year, it is necessary for the Spring Festival to prepare goods for the New Year and send gifts to our relatives. Every household must prepare food, firecrackers, spring festival couplets, new clothes, and sacrificial supplies for the New Year.

Posting New Year Red Paper-cuts and Couplets: In the twenty-nine and 30th year of the lunar year, every household starts to decorate windows and doors with red paper-cuts and couplets. Popular themes among these paper-cuts and couplets like “FU”, representing good fortune or happiness, wealth, and longevity.  After the Tang Dynasty, people liked to stick the portrayals of Qin Shubao and Yu Chigong on the door as door gods, having been handed down to this day.

Having Reunion Dinner: with New Year’s Eve approaching, no matter how far away and how busy we are, every family will return home to have a reunion dinner together. On the night of New Year’s Eve, good dishes are put on the table, usually with chicken (meaning plans for next year) and fish (for enough left to spend) to send good luck. We waited until we worshipped our ancestors before we officially started the meal. The whole family sat around the dining table and shared the family relationship.

Setting off Firecrackers: The original purpose of firecrackers was to welcome gods and expel ghosts and gradually evolved into a sign of leaving the old and welcoming the new. As the new year arrives, every household set off firecrackers, symbolizing the prosperity and safety of the new year. On New Year’s Eve, there was a gorgeous firework show. Everyone got together, talking, laughing, and presenting a peaceful atmosphere.

Sweeping the dust: sweeping the dust means removing the old and welcoming the new. Regardless of the past year, sweeping the dust and cleaning the utensils can bring good luck in the new year. The removal of the old and the new often also reflects the family’s industrious.

New Year greetings: New Year greetings during the Spring Festival are the traditional customs handed down. At the beginning of the new year, the elderly and children all put on new clothes, brought gifts to relatives and friends, and sent New Year blessings. It is a culture of respecting the old and loving the young; on the other hand, it also connects emotions.
